How to deal with Acidity

Acidity occurs when there is excess secretion of acids in the gastric glands of the stomach producing gas, bad breath, stomach ache and other symptoms. Acidity can be caused due to long gaps between meals, empty stomach or excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, eating spicy foods, lack of exercise, irregular eating habits, stress. Diet plays an important role in curing stomach acidity. Hence here are 8 simple foods/ ingredients available in your kitchen that can be used to get rid of acidity.

  1. Carom seeds (Ajwain): Ajwain contains thymol an active ingredient that helps relief acidity by stimulating the stomach to release gastric juices and helps maintain normal PH levels which give a relief from acidity, indigestion, and flatulence. How: Mix 1 tbs carom seeds with lemon and rock salt in lukewarm water for quick              and best results.

  2. Basil leaves: The holy leaves have many medical components that make the excellent digestive agent these leaves create misuses by stimulating stomach and they reduce the effect of peptic acid. It cures gas and bloating. How: Take 5-6 leaves, wash and chew slowly after a meal. Take 9 leaves wash crush and add to lukewarm water.

  3. Fennel seeds: It is a tradition in many Indian homes to chew some fennel seeds after meals, this makes digestion faster and saves you from acidity heart burn, flatulence, and indigestion. It has a variety of active constituents and carminative property which soothes the digestive tract and decrease inflammation, gas and bloating. Fennel seed oil can also be used. How: Chew fennel seeds after a meal or have fennel seeds tea or Drink water                        (fennel seeds soaked in water).

  4. Soaked Raisins: Raisins contain potassium and magnesium which helps reduce acidity. Potassium and magnesium are important components of antacids. On the basis of PH scale, they help in neutralizing acids and prevent acidity. How: Soak raisins overnight in a glass of water, drink the water and chew 5-6                        soaked raisins.

  5. Jaggery: Ever wonder why our elders finished a meal with a Jaggery (gud)? It is due to its high magnesium content, jaggery helps boost intestinal strength. It aids digestion and makes digestive system more alkaline in nature and thus reduces acidity. How: Have a small piece of jaggery after meal or Drink jaggery sharbat (soak in ice cold water)

  6. Ginger: It has excellent digestive and anti inflammatory properties. It is an alkalizing herb, its PH remains between 7.35 and 7.45, at this PH body is alkaline which is good for tissue, cells, and organs. Ginger stimulates saliva production which washes away acid that has refluxed. How: Have a spoon full of ginger juice 2-3 times Steep fresh ginger in boiling water and drink

  7. Coconut water: coconut water is a natural isotonic beverage have the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in blood. It turns acidic level in your body to alkaline which gives instant relief from acidity. It is packed with various minerals which make it more nutritious. How: Have coconut water every morning

  8. Banana: It contains natural antacids that can act as a buffer against acid reflux. Banana contains chemicals that stimulate stomach lining to produce more mucus which protects from stomach acids. Also, it is rich in fiber which speeds digestion. How: Have a ripe banana in the afternoon to reduce stomach acids.
