Body Fat % Calculator (Navy method)
Estimate your body fat percentage from neck, waist, and hip circumference measurements. Accurate within ±3-4% for most adults — the most accurate equipment-free method available.
Body Fat % Calculator
US Navy method using circumference measurements. Most accurate when measured first thing in the morning.
Why body fat % matters more than BMI for Indians
Indians carry visceral fat (the dangerous fat around organs) at lower body weight than European populations. A 24 BMI in an Indian can hide 30%+ body fat — the same BMI in a European may sit at 20-22% body fat. The visceral fat is what drives metabolic disease, not the weight itself.
Body fat ranges (women)
- Below 14% — Essential fat (athletic / risk of hormonal disruption if sustained)
- 14-20% — Athletic
- 21-24% — Fitness
- 25-31% — Average
- 32% or above — Obese (metabolic risk)
Body fat ranges (men)
- Below 6% — Essential fat (rarely sustainable)
- 6-13% — Athletic
- 14-17% — Fitness
- 18-24% — Average
- 25% or above — Obese
Measurement tips
The biggest source of error is inconsistent measurement. Take all measurements first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom, before eating or drinking. Use a flexible (not metal) tape measure, pulled snug but not compressing the skin. Take each measurement 3 times and average them.
Beyond Navy method
For higher precision, DEXA scans (₹3,000-5,000 in Indian metros) give ±1-2% accuracy and regional fat distribution data. Bioelectrical impedance scales are convenient but less accurate (±5%). For most people, the Navy method tracked monthly is more useful than a one-time DEXA — trend matters more than precision.
Pair body fat with the BMI calculator for a fuller picture — neither tells the full story alone.
Common questions about body fat %
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For women: 14-20% is athletic, 21-24% is fitness range, 25-31% is average, 32%+ is obese. For men: 6-13% is athletic, 14-17% is fitness, 18-24% is average, 25%+ is obese. These ranges loosen by ~3-5 percentage points after age 50 due to natural muscle loss.
How accurate is the Navy method?
Within ±3-4% body fat for most adults — meaning if it says 22%, your true number is likely 19-25%. The Navy method is the most accurate non-equipment method available. For higher precision use DEXA scan (±1-2%), bioelectrical impedance (±5%), or skinfold calipers with trained assessment (±3%).
Why does body fat % matter more than BMI for Indians?
Indians (and South Asians broadly) carry more visceral fat at lower BMI than European populations — the 'thin-fat Indian' phenotype. A 24 BMI can hide 30%+ body fat in an Indian adult. This visceral fat is the metabolic risk factor that drives PCOS, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in Indians. Tracking body fat directly catches the risk that BMI misses.
How should I take the measurements?
First thing in the morning, after using the bathroom, before eating or drinking. Use a flexible tape measure — pulled snug but not tight. Neck: below the larynx (Adam's apple area). Waist: at the navel for women, narrowest point for men. Hip (women only): at the widest point of the buttocks. Take each measurement 3 times and use the average.
When should I get a DEXA scan instead?
When you need precision — preparing for a competition, tracking body recomposition during weight loss when the scale hasn't moved but your body has changed, or evaluating treatment response to interventions like resistance training. DEXA costs ₹3,000-5,000 in most Indian metros and gives ±1-2% accuracy plus regional fat distribution data.
