Frequently asked questions
What is prana mudra and how is it done?
Prana mudra is formed by touching the tips of the ring finger and little finger to the tip of the thumb, while extending the index and middle fingers. It is practised during pranayama or meditation, ideally for 15-30 minutes. Both hands perform the mudra simultaneously with palms facing upward on the knees.
What are the traditional health benefits of prana mudra?
In yogic tradition, prana mudra is associated with activating dormant prana (vital energy), boosting immunity and vitality, improving eyesight, reducing fatigue and lethargy, and calming the mind. It is said to balance all five elements and is one of the most recommended mudras for overall health.
Can prana mudra help with eye health?
Traditional yoga claims prana mudra improves vision and reduces eye strain. While direct clinical evidence is limited, the meditative practice associated with mudras reduces eye-related tension from screen use. Combined with eye exercises (palming, focus shifting) and adequate vitamin A and lutein intake, it may complement eye health practices.
How does prana mudra fit into a daily wellness routine?
Practise prana mudra for 15-30 minutes as part of morning pranayama or meditation. It combines well with Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) and Bhramari pranayama. Regular practice is said to increase energy throughout the day. It requires no special setting - it can be done while seated at a desk.
Is prana mudra safe for everyone to practise?
Yes - mudras are gentle and suitable for all ages and health conditions. Those with hand or finger injuries should practice with modifications or skip specific mudras that cause discomfort. No contraindications exist for prana mudra. It is particularly recommended for people with chronic fatigue, low immunity, or those recovering from illness.
