How To know Your Dosha

Ayurveda, which roughly translates to “knowledge of life,” aims to maintain complete wellness using natural remedies. Ayurveda recognizes that we are made of

. These elements make up the three types of energies or “doshas,” which were introduced in the last blog:
“Vata” (Space and Air), “Pitta” (Fire and Water), and “Kapha” (Water and Earth)

Frequently asked questions
What are the three Ayurvedic doshas and what do they represent?
Vata (air and space) governs movement, communication, and nervous system function. Pitta (fire and water) governs transformation, digestion, and metabolism. Kapha (earth and water) governs structure, lubrication, and immunity. Each person has a unique combination (prakriti) with one or two dominant doshas that influences constitution, health tendencies, and dietary needs.
How accurate is a dosha quiz at determining your constitution?
Online dosha quizzes provide a rough indication but are not highly accurate - results vary significantly between quizzes and are affected by your current health state. Traditional Ayurvedic assessment by a qualified vaidya includes pulse diagnosis (nadi pariksha), physical observation, and detailed case history for a reliable prakriti determination.
How does knowing your dosha help with diet?
Vata types (light, cold, dry tendencies) benefit from warm, oily, grounding foods and regular meal timing. Pitta types (sharp, hot, intense) do well with cooling, mildly spiced foods and avoiding excessive fermented or sour foods. Kapha types (heavy, slow, cold) benefit from lighter, spicier, warming foods and avoiding excess dairy and sweet foods.
Can your dosha change over time?
Your inherent constitution (prakriti) doesn't change, but your current imbalance state (vikriti) changes constantly with season, age, diet, stress, illness, and lifestyle. Ayurvedic treatment addresses vikriti (the current imbalance) while respecting prakriti. This is why Ayurvedic recommendations change seasonally and with life circumstances.
Does modern nutrition science validate the dosha system?
There's partial overlap - Vata's characteristics map loosely to high sympathetic nervous activity; Pitta to high metabolic rate and inflammatory tendencies; Kapha to slower metabolism and anabolic tendencies. Some dosha-based dietary recommendations align with modern personalised nutrition principles, though the philosophical framework is distinct from evidence-based medicine.
