"My NRI clients often tell me every Mounjaro plan they find is jacket potatoes and chicken salad. You do not need to give up your own food. Dal, kadhi, curd, paneer, sattu, rajma and fish curry fit this medicine beautifully once you get the order right: protein first, vegetables next, a small portion of grain last, and fluids all day." - Dt. The short answer: a good Mounjaro diet plan follows your injection week. In the first two or three days after the weekly injection, when many people find their appetite is lowest, eat small, soft, protein-first mini-meals such as chaas, curd, kadhi or dal soup. As appetite returns later in the week, build fuller plates with paneer, tofu, eggs, fish or chicken first and a little rice or roti.

Most Mounjaro meal plans online are built around porridge, jacket potatoes and chicken salad. If your week runs on dal, sabzi, roti and curd, if you are vegetarian, or if you cook for a family in London, Leicester, Toronto, New Jersey, Dubai or Sydney, this plan is built for your kitchen. The core rules shared by every medicine in this class are in our GLP-1 diet plan for Indian eaters. This page covers what is specific to Mounjaro: how it works, the dose steps, and the rhythm of a once-a-week injection.

What makes Mounjaro different

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. In the US, the same medicine is sold as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and as Zepbound for weight management. In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for both, and for weight it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, according to the UK Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC). Brand names, licensed uses and availability differ in Canada, Australia, the UAE, Singapore and India, so always follow the leaflet from your own pharmacy.

It acts on two hormone receptors, not one. The SmPC describes tirzepatide as a long-acting GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Both are gut hormones released after eating, and both have receptors in brain areas that regulate appetite. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) acts on GLP-1 alone.

What that means for appetite. The SmPC reports that in clinical studies tirzepatide reduced hunger from the first week of treatment, increased fullness from week 3, and lowered cravings for fatty fast food, sweets and starchy foods (cravings for fruit and vegetables did not drop). It also slows how quickly the stomach empties, though the SmPC notes this effect lessens over time.

How much weight people lost in the main trial. In SURMOUNT-1, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2022, 2,539 adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related condition, and without diabetes took weekly tirzepatide or a placebo for 72 weeks. Average weight change was 15.0% on 5 mg, 19.5% on 10 mg and 20.9% on 15 mg, against 3.1% on placebo. These are averages: some people lost much more, some much less. In England, NICE guidance TA1026 recommends tirzepatide for weight management in some adults alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, and uses a lower BMI threshold for people of South Asian background.

The side-effect pattern. Stomach side effects are the most common. In the pooled SURMOUNT weight-management trials summarised in the SmPC, nausea affected 24.6% to 29.0% of people on tirzepatide (8.5% on placebo) and diarrhoea 18.7% to 22.5% (7.8% on placebo). Most were mild or moderate, and nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea were more common during dose escalation and eased over time. That timing is why a Mounjaro diet plan has to account for dose steps.

How to eat when your prescriber steps up your dose

Mounjaro is started low and increased slowly. The UK SmPC sets a starting dose of 2.5 mg once a week, rising to 5 mg after 4 weeks. After that, the dose can go up in 2.5 mg steps, with at least 4 weeks on each dose, to a maximum of 15 mg. The US prescribing information states that 2.5 mg is for starting treatment, not a maintenance dose, and that the gradual escalation reduces the risk of stomach side effects.

Your prescriber decides when and whether to step up, and some people stay on a lower dose. Your job is the food: treat each step-up as a fresh first week.

StageWhat the product information saysHow to eat
**Starting dose (first 4 weeks)**Lowest dose; appetite reduction starts in week 1Learn your pattern. Note which days you feel least hungry and which foods sit well
**The weeks right after a step-up**Stomach side effects are more likely during escalationBack to mini-meals, less fried and rich food, soft "safe foods" in the fridge
**Settled on a dose**Side effects usually ease over timeFuller plates on higher-appetite days, protein first
**Months in**The slowing of stomach emptying lessens over timeHabits carry the work: portions, protein, strength training

For step-up weeks:

  • Stock the fridge the day before. Curd, chaas, boiled eggs, paneer cubes and a pot of moong dal soup mean you are never cooking on a queasy evening.
  • Keep social plans light for the first couple of days after a step-up, if you can. A heavy biryani dinner is a poor test of a new dose.
  • Track, do not guess. One line a day in your phone ("Day 2: nausea after lunch, fine with curd rice") shows your pattern within a few weeks.
  • Report side effects that do not settle. Never skip, delay or split a dose on your own.

Eat by injection week: the weekly appetite cycle

The medicine level in your blood is not flat across the week. The SmPC states that tirzepatide peaks 8 to 72 hours after the injection and has a half-life of about five days, so it never fully wears off between doses.

Many people notice that the first two or three days after the injection are their lowest-appetite, most-queasy days, and that hunger creeps back towards the end of the week. No trial has measured appetite day by day across the week, so treat this as a common pattern to test against your own, not a rule.

If the pattern fits you, plan like this:

  • Days 1 to 3 (low appetite): thoda thoda, baar baar. Five or six mini-meals, soft, cool or drinkable, with protein in every one.
  • Day 4 (transition): small meals with more texture. A good day for batch cooking.
  • Days 5 to 7 (more appetite): three proper meals and one or two snacks. Protein still goes first, and portion awareness matters most here.

In the plan below, Day 1 is your injection day, whichever day of the week that is.

A 7-day Indian Mounjaro meal plan

The base plan is vegetarian, with egg and non-veg options for each day in the second table. A katori here means a small bowl of about 150 ml. If you cannot finish a meal, finish the protein part first.

Day 7Egg curry, light gravyChicken keema with peas in place of soya keema

Notes on the plan:

  • Low-appetite days are about getting something in. If a meal feels impossible, a glass of milk, lassi, sattu or a protein shake still counts. Read whether protein powder is safe before choosing one.
  • If you are eating very little for more than a few days, cannot get near your protein target, or feel weak or faint, tell your prescriber or dietitian. Do not wait for the next dose.
  • Fuller days are not cheat days. Keep the same plate order (protein, vegetables, then grain), and stop at "enough", not "full".
  • Rice and roti stay. Half a katori of rice or one small roti per meal is a reasonable start. To check your usual servings, see calories and protein in Indian foods.
  • This is a template, not a prescription. Your weight, blood reports, medicines and routine change what fits you.

Protein and strength training, briefly

A joint advisory from four US nutrition and obesity bodies (2025) notes that higher protein targets of 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight a day have been proposed during active weight loss, and that it is unclear whether this should be based on actual or adjusted body weight. As a worked example only, a reference weight of 70 kg (about 154 lb) gives roughly 84 to 112 g a day. Your own number should be set with your dietitian or doctor, and if you have kidney disease your renal team decides.

The same advisory recommends strength training at least three times a week plus at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly to help preserve muscle and bone. Days 5 to 7, when you eat more, are often the easiest days for heavier sessions. For detail on vegetarian protein and muscle, read protein on GLP-1 to prevent muscle loss.

Mounjaro side effects: Indian food fixes

The SmPC lists nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain among the most common side effects, with indigestion, burping, reflux, wind and bloating also reported. Food often helps.

Side effectWhat usually helpsIndian foods to try
**Nausea**Very small meals, cool or room-temperature food, sipping fluids between meals rather than with them, staying upright after eatingJeera chaas, plain curd, curd rice, khakhra, dhokla, a slice of ginger in warm water, ginger or peppermint tea
**Constipation**Fluids through the day, fibre built up gradually, a daily walkSoft-cooked sabzi, papaya, soaked figs or prunes, ground flaxseed in curd, isabgol in water (ask your doctor first)
**Diarrhoea**Smaller meals, no large or high-fat meals, replacing fluidsKhichdi, curd rice, banana, idli, ORS, salted nimbu pani
**Reflux and heartburn**Smaller and earlier dinners, less oil and chilli, no lying down for 2 to 3 hours after eatingDal and sabzi with less tadka, plain rice, curd, a light early dinner
**Burping, including "sulphur burps"**Smaller portions, eating slowly, fewer fizzy drinks, noticing which meals trigger itSimple dal-rice or curd rice on bad days; try a smaller serving of heavier dals and gravies

The joint advisory lists ginger or peppermint tea as options for nausea. For stubborn constipation, see constipation solutions beyond fibre and water and ask your doctor before any laxative.

About "sulphur burps". Burping (eructation) is a listed side effect: the US prescribing information reports it in 5% of people on 15 mg in the obesity trials, against 1% on placebo. Many people describe these burps as eggy, but the trials recorded burping, not the smell, so no food protocol has been tested. Keep a short food diary and tell your prescriber, especially if it comes with vomiting or pain.

A Mounjaro grocery list for Indian cooking abroad

You do not need specialist food. Most of this list is in a large supermarket in any of the cities below, and Indian grocers fill the gaps.

CategoryWhat to buyWhere it is usually easy to find
**Dairy protein**Paneer, thick curd or Greek yoghurt, skyr, cottage cheese, milkUK: Tesco, Sainsbury's. US: Costco, ShopRite. Dubai: Lulu, Carrefour. Sydney: Woolworths, Coles
**Plant protein**Firm tofu, soya chunks, frozen edamame, sattu, besan, roasted chanaTofu and edamame in supermarkets; soya chunks and sattu at Indian grocers
**Eggs, fish, chicken**Eggs, frozen white fish fillets, salmon, skinless chickenAny supermarket; frozen fillets keep well
**Dals and pulses**Moong, masoor, toor, chana dal, rajma, lobia, kala chanaIndian grocers; tinned chickpeas and kidney beans everywhere
**Grains (small amounts)**Rice, whole-wheat atta, jowar, bajra and ragi flour, poha, rava, idli or dosa batterIndian grocers for millet flours and fresh batter
**Vegetables**Lauki, tori, methi, palak, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, beans, bainganFrozen spinach and mixed veg for low-energy days
**Fruit**Papaya, banana, guava, apples, pomegranate, figs, prunesGuava and papaya at Indian or Asian grocers
**Tummy helpers**Fresh ginger, jeera, lemons, mint, isabgol (psyllium husk), ORS sachets, peppermint teaPsyllium husk in pharmacies and health shops
**Drinks**Coconut water, unsweetened lassi or kefir, low-salt stock for soupsMost supermarkets

City notes. In Leicester, the Belgrave Road grocers stock fresh methi, lauki and tori. In New Jersey, the Indian stores along Oak Tree Road in Edison carry fresh paneer, batters and every dal. In Toronto, the South Asian grocers in Brampton and Mississauga do the same. In Dubai, Indian brands fill the hypermarket shelves; in Sydney, Harris Park is the easy stop, and in Singapore, Little India. Safety: what to discuss with your doctor

Diet can ease side effects, but these points need your doctor.

If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea. The SmPC states that people taking tirzepatide with a sulfonylurea (such as gliclazide or glimepiride) or insulin may have a higher risk of low blood sugar, and that lowering the dose of those medicines may reduce it. That adjustment is your doctor's to make, never yours. Keep meals regular, even on low-appetite days. The NHS defines low blood sugar as generally below 4 mmol/L, and the US CDC uses below 70 mg/dL. Warning signs include sweating, shaking, hunger, a fast heartbeat, dizziness and confusion. Our Indian diabetes diet guide covers the wider diabetes plate.

If you use the contraceptive pill. In June 2025 the UK medicines regulator, the MHRA, advised that Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives in people who are overweight, and that they should also use a non-oral method such as condoms, a coil or an implant, especially for the 4 weeks after starting and after every dose increase. The US prescribing information gives similar advice. The MHRA also advises that these medicines must not be used in pregnancy, while trying to get pregnant, or while breastfeeding, so if you are planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor early.

Dehydration. The SmPC warns that nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, which can affect the kidneys. The NHS lists signs of dehydration including thirst, dark strong-smelling urine, peeing less often, dizziness, tiredness and a dry mouth. Eating less also means less water from food, so sip steadily.

Contact your doctor or NHS 111 (or your local equivalent) urgently, or seek emergency care, if you have:

  • Severe stomach pain that does not go away, which may spread to your back, with or without vomiting. This can be a sign of acute pancreatitis.
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea that does not stop, or you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Dizziness on standing that does not pass, or very little or very dark urine.
  • Upper tummy pain, fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, which the US prescribing information lists as possible gallbladder symptoms.
  • Repeated low blood sugar if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, a widespread rash or trouble breathing.
  • A new lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness or trouble swallowing, which the US prescribing information asks you to report.

Before surgery or sedation, tell the team you take tirzepatide, as the NHS tirzepatide page advises.

Alcohol, eating out, weddings and festivals

Alcohol. The NHS advises avoiding alcohol on tirzepatide, because it can make nausea and vomiting worse. With insulin or a sulfonylurea, it also adds to the risk of low blood sugar. If you do drink, keep it small, never on an empty stomach, and ask your doctor first.

Eating out. Choose tandoori or grilled dishes over makhani or cream gravies, dal tadka over dal makhani, and phulka over naan. Share mains and eat the protein first. At a Dubai brunch or a Leicester buffet, one small plate eaten slowly beats three you regret.

Weddings and festivals. At a sangeet, Diwali party or Eid dinner, pick paneer tikka, tandoori chicken or chana chaat from the starters, skip most fried items, and choose one sweet you truly love. If a big event falls on a low-appetite day, eat less and enjoy the company. Before moving your injection day around events, ask your prescriber or pharmacist. See also festive eating with diabetes, which works for anyone managing portions.

Stopping or coming off Mounjaro

The NHS advises talking to your doctor before stopping tirzepatide rather than stopping suddenly. When the medicine stops, appetite returns, and the habits you built on it are what you keep: protein first, smaller plates, fewer fried foods and regular strength training. Our guide to coming off a GLP-1 without regaining weight covers the transition step by step.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat in my first week on Mounjaro?

Eat small, soft, protein-led mini-meals every 3 to 4 hours: chaas, curd, curd rice, moong dal soup, kadhi with a little rice, dhokla or a few paneer cubes. Sip fluids between meals and skip fried and rich food. Use the first week to learn your own pattern, noting which days after the injection you feel least hungry and which foods sit well, then plan future weeks around it.

Can I eat rice and roti on Mounjaro?

Yes. You do not need to cut out rice or roti. Eat your protein and vegetables first, then add a small portion of grain: half a katori of rice or one small roti is a reasonable start. On low-appetite days, soft rice with dal or curd is often one of the easiest foods to manage. The thing to avoid is a large serving of rice that leaves no room for protein.

How much protein do I need on Mounjaro?

During active weight loss, targets of 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight a day have been proposed, according to a 2025 joint advisory on nutrition for GLP-1 medicines. For a reference weight of 70 kg, that is roughly 84 to 112 g a day. Experts have not agreed whether to use actual or adjusted weight, so your dietitian should set your number. With kidney disease, your doctor decides.

Why am I not losing weight on Mounjaro?

Early on, you are on a starting dose, and the SmPC notes it takes about 4 weeks of weekly injections to reach steady levels. Other common reasons are liquid calories (sweet chai, juice, lassi, alcohol), larger meals on higher-appetite days, and weekend eating. Results also vary between people. NICE guidance for England says clinicians should decide whether to continue treatment if less than 5% of starting weight is lost after 6 months on the highest tolerated dose.

Can vegetarians do well on Mounjaro?

Yes, with planning. Build every mini-meal around a vegetarian protein: paneer, tofu, soya chunks, thick dal, hung curd, Greek yoghurt, sattu, sprouts or roasted chana. On low-appetite days, drinkable protein such as milk, lassi, sattu sharbat or a protein shake helps. Very small diets can fall short in iron, B12, calcium and vitamin D, so ask your doctor whether testing makes sense.

What foods should I avoid on Mounjaro?

Nothing is banned forever, but limit fried food (samosa, pakora, puri, bhature), rich cream or butter gravies, mithai, sugary and fizzy drinks, very large portions and alcohol. These are the foods most likely to worsen nausea, reflux and bloating, especially in the days after an injection and after a dose step. Small portions at celebrations are usually fine once your stomach has settled.

Is the Mounjaro diet different from the Ozempic diet?

The core rules are the same: protein first, small meals, steady fluids and fibre added gradually. What differs with Mounjaro is the planning around tirzepatide's dose steps, which happen every 4 weeks or longer, and the weekly injection rhythm. Many people find the first two or three days after the injection are their lowest-appetite days, so mini-meals suit those days and fuller plates suit the rest of the week.

Is there a Mounjaro diet plan PDF?

We do not offer a downloadable PDF. The two tables in the 7-day plan above are easy to screenshot or print, and you can repeat or swap days freely. Any printed plan works best when it fits your own appetite pattern, medicines and blood reports, so if you have diabetes, PCOS or kidney concerns, a personalised plan is worth considering.
